Part of Planning social listening for 2027 on dated evidence and bounded AI use

Five social listening signals to watch in 2027: AI visibility, sampling, quotes, skills and data law

Five dated signals for social listening in England in 2027: AI visibility tracking, non-sampled volume tiers, quote-only pricing, AI skills and ICO reviews.

What to take away

  • AI visibility tracking now appears as a named capability in supplier plan pages.
  • Volume tiers are sold in non-sampled results, which makes sampling a buying question.
  • Several suppliers still sell by custom quote, not list price.
  • Skills England has published a benchmark for basic AI skills at work.
  • ICO guidance on processor contracts is under review after the Data (Use and Access) Act.

Each signal rests on a public page that can be opened today. None is a market forecast. Treat each one as a check on a current plan, and note what would make you revisit it.

1. AI visibility tracking becomes a product line

Suppliers now sell tracking of how AI assistants describe a brand. Meltwater sells AI Visibility Tracking beside social listening and media relations as a selectable capability. Talkwalker's Core plan includes LLM Insights, which monitor how AI assistants talk about a brand and an industry.

This is a new source, so it needs its own record. Note which assistants are queried, with which prompts and how often. A result from an assistant is a model output, not a public post. Keep it apart from mention counts, as described in AI applications.

2. Sampled results become a pricing question

Talkwalker sells its tiers in terms of non-sampled results volume. Core is pitched at an ideal volume for non-sampled results, the Analyze tier offers 2x that volume and the Business tier 6x. The unit being priced is the share of results returned without sampling.

For a buyer the question follows directly: what happens to results beyond the tier, and is the dashboard labelled when a sample is shown? Record the answer before you compare tiers. The pitfalls of unlabelled samples are set out in measurement mistakes.

3. Quotes stay more common than list prices

Talkwalker asks visitors to pick a plan to get a custom quote. Meltwater's Starter, Pro and Enterprise plans each end in a Contact Sales button. Some tools do publish prices, which makes them easier to compare.

The signal for 2027 budgets is the price you cannot see. Ask for a dated schedule, keep the original currency and tax wording, and see pricing models for how seats, usage and tailored scope move the risk.

4. A published benchmark for AI skills at work

The AI foundation skills benchmark from Skills England appeared on 28 January 2026. It covers the basic technical, non-technical, responsible and ethical skills people need to use simple AI tools at work.

A listening team can use it as a checklist of tasks, not a forecast of jobs. Turn each line into something observable, such as coding a reference sample or challenging an automated summary. The approach is explained in skills as tasks.

5. Data protection guidance under review

The ICO guidance on contracts between controllers and processors is marked as under review because of the Data (Use and Access) Act. The checklist on that page still has the processor delete or return all personal data at the end of the contract.

If a listening supplier processes personal data for you, the contract terms are part of the plan. Re-read the guidance when the ICO republishes it, and keep the data protection record up to date with the contract version.

Using the signals without forecasting

A Futures Toolkit for policymakers and analysts is a set of tools for long-term strategic thinking in policy. Its use here is modest: run the five signals through a scenario and ask which controls survive each one. The risk scenarios article gives five failures to rehearse.

Before you act

  • Add AI visibility results as a separate source in the register.
  • Ask each supplier how it labels sampled results.
  • Request a dated, itemised quote in writing.
  • Map the skills benchmark to named tasks and owners.
  • Diarise a check of the ICO contracts page.
